He earned his PhD in English, with a focus on rhetoric and composition, from the Pennsylvania State University in 2007. His book, \u003cem\u003eYou Can't Padlock an Idea: Rhetorical Education at the Highlander Folk School, 1932-1961\u003c\/em\u003e, was published by the University of South Carolina Press in 2014 and examines the educational programs that Highlander used to support labor and civil rights activists.
